Dermatology
Dogs and cats with skin conditions may excessively lick, scratch or chew their legs, feet or other areas of the body. Infections, inflammation or autoimmune conditions can cause discomfort, hair loss or changes in the skin barrier. Thorough dermatologic diagnostic testing allow our doctors to identify the underlying cause of these symptoms and choose appropriate treatment options.
Our doctors diagnose skin conditions by carefully examining the affected area(s) and will perform in-house cytology to review samples taken from these areas under the microscope. Diagnostic tests such as culture and sensitivity testing or ringworm PCR testing may be sent to the lab if your pet's symptoms necessitate it.
Once your pet's condition is identified, we’ll prescribe a treatment plan which may include oral and/or topical medications. We may also recommend a dietary trial if food allergies are suspected. If left untreated, allergies and other skin conditions can make four-legged family members very uncomfortable and may lead to more serious medical conditions. Allergic or autoimmune conditions often will require ongoing, life-long management. For more information, see this blog entry.
